Pushkin House Brings Russian Culture to London
Tuesday 21 May 19:30 JACQUI HONESS-MARTIN DISCUSSES ALEXANDER OSTROVSKY
Alexander Ostrovsky was the greatest Russian playwright of the 19th century and his works are still among the most widely read and frequently performed in Russia today. How does his biting social satire about the ambitious Moscow merchants of the 1870s translate to the Moscow and the London of today?
The critically acclaimed theatre director Jacqui Honess-Martin discusses her new Arcola Theatre production of Ostrovsky’s Larisa and the Merchants (Girl with no Dowry) with Pushkin House Co-Chair and former theatre critic Sergei Ostrovsky.
With glowing reviews from The Guardian, The Times and The Telegraph, Larisa and the Merchants (Бесприданница/Girl with no Dowry) is a passionate, razor-sharp comedy about a penniless woman and the men who want her and is being staged in the UK for the first time in a new version by Samuel Adamson.

A vibrant cultural programme
We have developed a lively, varied programme of Russian literature, art, film, music, theatre and dance, history, philosophy and politics. Our events include lectures and talks, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, films, concerts and readings, and we operate a well-stocked reference library of Russian culture.
We welcome and encourage collaboration with other institutions and groups. We run regular Russian courses provided by the Russian Language Centre, and we are establishing creative partnerships with major museums and libraries in Russia and the UK.
Collaborate, donate, support, become a Friend
We are charity funded by charitable donations. To maintain the House, provide rich cultural programmes and expand our activities in the future, we need and welcome new donors, supporters and Friends. You can find out more on our Donate page.
