Daniel Beer, Senior Lecturer in Modern European at Royal Holloway, University of London, in conversation with editor of History Today, historian Paul Lay, talks about his book, The House of the Dead: Siberian Exile Under the Tsars, published in summer 2016, which includes previously unpublished material, the fruits of extensive research in Siberian and other Russian archives. The House of the Dead is on the Shortlist of the 2017 Pushkin House Russian Book Prize and Daniel Beer will be joining us again on 14 June, 2017, as part of our Shortlist Programme. He will be in conversation with Pulizer-winning historian Anne Applebaum and they will explore the history of punishment and repression in Russia and examine the contrasts and continuities between the tsarist and soviet regimes.
