The story the former division officer Kotov and the NKGB major Arsentyev goes on. Kotov miraculously avoids execution in the beginning of the war, escapes from the labour camp and hides amongst the regular soldiers of the penal battalion.
In 1943 Arsentyev receives a personal charge from Stalin to find Kotov executing the order the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. Arsentyev gets a sealed package with Stalin’s order and leaves for the front line in search for Kotov. The life of Kotov’s daughter, Nadia, also changes drastically with the beginning of the war – she becomes a nurse.
Arsentyev finds out what happened to Kotov in the beginning of the war from a “SMERSH” officer. He finally finds out where Kotov should be – in the front line at a German citadel, which is said to be hell on earth.
