Derek S. Henderson’s Biography

JULIAN GALLANT read music at St Anne’s College 1984-1987, then pursued his studies as a pianist in Switzerland. Since his piano début recital at St John’s Smith Square in 1992 he has performed all over the world as a soloist and with ensembles including the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orquestra Sinfonica Brasiliera, Kiev Chamber Orchestra and Moscow Virtuosi. His recordings include Piano Concertos of Our Time and a disc of French music for two pianos. Julian Gallant has played for many distinguished singers and instrumentalists including sopranos Valeria Stenkina and Tatiana Pavlovskaya, the world-renowned baritone Sergei Leiferkus and violinist Grigori Zhislin.
Chief Conductor of the Russian Orchestra of London, Julian has also guest-conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and on tour. He has worked with orchestras in the Russian cities of Togliatti, Voronezh, Omsk, Ufa, Yaroslavl and Samara, the State Symphony Orchestra of Macedonia, the Armenian Philharmonic the Georgian State Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Julian Gallant has conducted at Helikon Opera in Moscow, the Kazakhstan State Opera and the Tbilisi State Opera. He conducted the Novaya Rossia orchestra in March 2010 in a programme of music by Britten, Elgar and Walton.
Julian Gallant has recorded music for Radio-Télévision Suisse-romande and has prepared and presented documentary programmes about Mozart, Schumann and Shostakovich “Performance” TV Channel. Julian Gallant is Director of Pushkin House, a centre of Russian culture in central London.
