C rimea – A breathtakingly exotic and beautiful peninsula with unique culture and diverse history.
Join us on this fascinating talk about a true gem of Ukraine – the Crimean Peninsula. It is nothing like the rest of Ukraine – with Mediterranean coast, turquoise sea, forested stony mountains, deep canyons, lush greenery, lavish Tsar’s and Tatar Khan’s palaces, world famous wines and wineries and delicious local cuisine. The region was adored and conquered by many ancient civilizations and modern day empires – from Greeks and Genoese to Tsars and the Soviet Union. More recent history has been made here too – The conference between Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin at Yalta marked the end of the Second Word War, but also the beginning of the Cold War between the East and the Wes t. The Crimea also enjoys cultural and religious diversity: Karaite kenassas, Tatar mosques, Jewish synagogues, Orthodox churches – all coexist here peacefully. It is also home to the Russian Black Sea fleet for least another 25 years.
