Award-winning film 'Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer'

A special chance to see Sundance Special Jury Prize Winner, ‘Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer’ at Pushkin House.

Q[&]A session with director Mike Lerner after the film screening.

Last year, the feminist collective Pussy Riot performed a 40-second ‘punk prayer’ inside the Cathedral of Christ Saviour, Moscow’s iconic church. The performance led to a high-profile trial and the imprisonment of three young women, two of whom are still in jail.

With unparalleled and exclusive footage, Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin’s film, ‘Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer’, is a potted history of Pussy Riot and the trial which it suggests was a Stalinist-era show trial. But the film is also a revealing portrait of the real women behind the famous colourful balaclavas.

The documentary, filmed over six months, closely follows the twists and turns of the trial, including the women’s own articulate court room testimonies, and observes the women’s spirited response from behind their glass-fronted dock to an often absurd situation. It also has revealing interviews with the women’s parents, friends and extreme Orthodox believers. Moving from farce to tragedy and back again, the film explores how political and religious forces contrived to make an example out of three young women who stepped out of line. The film asks who is really on trial, the women or the society in which they live?

The money raised from this event will go towards the work of the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre and Pushkin House.
