Devoted to A.S. Pushkin’s Wedding - 18 February 1831
This year’s Valentine Day will be devoted to Pushkin and his wife, Natalia Goncharova. We’ll revisit the time when the high society of Russia enjoyed the very best the gastronomic world of the 19th Century could offer. Pushkin, the founder of modern Russian literature, was among those who were blessed with a fine palate and could fully appreciate the great culinary delights from around the world and Russia.
He devoted many pages of his prolific writing, and many letters to his wife and friends describing the treats he enjoyed throughout his life, especially his love of wine. Many of them contain precise details of what was eaten and drunk at a dinner or ball, so we can confidently recreate a picture of what these events were like.
So let’s take a peek into Pushkin’s world ten generations later and compare it with our own. The similarities and differences are fascinating.
Come to our next tasting at THE PUSHKIN HOUSE WINE CLUB on Wednesday, the 13th February, 19.00-21.00 to find out what it was like to live in style in Russia nearly 200 years ago. And as usual, someone will go home with a prize wine after winning the mini-quiz.
