RED TORCH THEATRE'S THE THREE SISTERS: SCREENING

Pushkin House and Stage Russia HD present a premiere screening of Red Torch Theatre's THE THREE SISTERS. Timofey Kulyabin, the 32 year old wunderkind artistic director of the Red Torch Theatre in Novosibirsk, has taken this classic work and reinvented it as an epic parable about finding harmony through suffering. The entire cast, save for one, communicate throughout the performance solely in sign language.

FILM SCREENING: CHRONICLES OF A REVOLUTION THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN BY KONSTANTIN SELIN

When in November 2015 in Russia the toll system for heavy trucks on Federal highways was imposed, it changed the life of its long-distance drivers. Nobody would expect that what started as a peaceful protest by the truck drivers would transform into a huge strike that lasted two months or more and became one of the leading protests of the time. The film was shown at the "Artdocfest", the largest documentary film festival in Russia. It won an award for Best Debut Film at the "Saratov Sufferings" International Documentary Festival. This event is part of our current exhibition - On The Eve, by Victoria Lomasko.

Russian music devotee, pianist Jonathan Powell plays Shostakovich’s complete Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87. The masterpiece was inspired by 48 Preludes and Fugues by J.S. Bach and written in 1950-51 in Moscow.  One of the best works written in Soviet Russia, the cycle is rarely heard in its entirety. Please note the concert ending time.

Evgeny Granilshchikov’s debut feature film pursues the exploration of the social and political landscape of contemporary Russia started in his short video works and drawings about a decade ago. Lives and careers of his characters develop against a backdrop of current political affairs. 2016's BBC Introducing artist Sasha Ilyukevich & the Highly Skilled Migrants create an incomparable brew of post punk electric energy and folk lyricism. Ilyukevich writes songs in Russian to capture the essence of Eastern-Slavic heritage but also translates his lyrics to English to convey the ideas behind his songs and share the nuances of language and emotion. In his songs Sasha fuses Western and Eastern-Slavic sensibilities to bridge a historical divide and engage understanding between two cultures to reverse prejudice between East and West.

Join us for a one act romantic comedy The House with a View to the Field, written in 1964 by Russian playwright Alexander Vampilov. The story centres on a young man who realises that he is in love with a local girl just as he is about to leave the village where he has spent three years on a teaching assignment. His egoism has prevented him from seeing life around him, and his realisation comes at a turning point in his life as a "late awakening". Performed by Natasha Radski and Thomas Schneesche.

Last summer, writer, journalist and campaigner Julius Strauss together with leading international photographer Thomas Dworzak, undertook a journey in the footsteps of John Steinbeck and Robert Capa to mark the 70th anniversary of their famous book A Russian Journal published in 1938, and also the 70th anniversary of the Magnum photography agency. Following a similar route, they visited Moscow, Ukraine and Georgia. In an exclusive evening for Pushkin House, Julius will recount his impressions of the trip, accompanied by Thomas Dworzak's photographs.

Abrahams, who writes about architecture for The Economist, will explore where this idealised settlement emerged from and how it was confounded by the politics of the Cold War as well as urban realities.
