
Julian Gallant
Director
Julian Gallant has been Director of Pushkin House and Chief Executive of the Pushkin House Trust since the organisation reestablished itself in 2006 in Bloomsbury, London.
Julian read music at Oxford University, then pursued his studies as a pianist in Switzerland. He later performed all over the world as a soloist and with ensembles including the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orquestra Sinfonica Brasiliera and Moscow Virtuosi. His recordings include Piano Concertos of Our Time and a disc of French music for two pianos. Julian Gallant also founded and conducted the Russian Orchestra of London and has guest-conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra of Macedonia, the Armenian Philharmonic, the Georgian State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and symphony orchestras in the Russian cities of Togliatti, Voronezh, Omsk, Ufa, Yaroslavl and Samara. He has conducted at Helikon Opera in Moscow, the Kazakhstan State Opera and the Tbilisi State Opera. Julian Gallant has prepared and presented documentary programmes about Mozart, Schumann and Shostakovich for “Performance” TV Channel (now “Sky Arts”).
Julian has considerable experience of administrative work in the arts and charitable sectors. He promoted and produced orchestral music, opera and ballet at major London venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Barbican, Albert Hall and the Royal Opera House. He organised tours for orchestras and dance companies in Russia and throughout Europe. In 1999 he co-founded the Oxford Philomusica, a charitable trust affiliated to the University, which comprises a symphony orchestra, chamber music and international piano festival.
