Sergey MIRONOV (b.1953) is a prominent Russian political leader and statesman, Speaker of the Federation Council, the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, and the leader of A Just Russia political party, which has the fourth largest faction in the State Duma, the parliament’s lower chamber.

Mironov became a prominent figure in Russia’s politics in 2001 following his election to the Federation Council. His role as its speaker assumed even greater importance after he launched and led to its first success in parliamentary elections his political party A Just Russia, whose platform emphasizes ideas of contemporary social democracy.

Trained as a field geologist, Sergey Mironov did not have a bureaucratic background or any links to security services, big business or liberal reformers of the Yeltsin era. He is therefore perceived by many Russians as “one of their own”, a person who knows and understands their needs. His openly respectful and even slightly nostalgic attitude towards the Soviet past, the times of his youth, also resonates with the Russian public.
