Pushkin House is the most active independent centre for Russian culture in London, welcoming thousands of people through its doors every year. We have 65 years of history as a gathering-place for everyone with an interest in Russia and Russian culture, from all different viewpoints, in a beautiful old house in the heart of Bloomsbury.

We are looking for a charismatic, resourceful, people-person to join our core team as an Evening Front of House & Facilities Manager.

Location: Pushkin House, London

Salary: £10.35 p/h, 20 days holiday pro rata.

Hours: This position will cover evening shifts (4pm – 10pm) on Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays (9.45am – 7.15pm). One additional evening shift will be offered starting from November 2019.

Closing date: 10:00am, Monday 19th August 2019

Interviews will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of August.

Start date: Monday 2nd September 2019

What we’re looking for

You will be full of energy, with an organised approach, a clear communication style and an understanding of what makes events run smoothly.

You will be a real people-person, able to engage with and relate to people from diverse backgrounds. We need someone equally comfortable discussing their favourite book, as well as navigating people to the cloakrooms.

Day to day, you will be working on the smooth delivery of our cultural programme and helping with any other events that take place in the House with the ability to think on your feet. When the House is quieter, you will be keeping our facilities in check.

You will be motivated by providing a great visitor experience and being the first point of contact for most people coming through our doors and phoning or emailing to inquire about our work.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have the ability of working independently. They will be confident in dealing with volunteers and not feel overwhelmed solving a technical problem under pressure (setting up mics, projectors, presentations). The job involves lifting and moving furniture and equipment, so having a good level of physical fitness (enough to feel comfortable spending a few hours a day setting up/clearing up around events) is essential.

If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!

Job Objectives:

  • To run the complete evening front of house service to give visitors, partners and performers/speakers the best possible experience of Pushkin House. This may include seating people especially the elderly.

  •  To make all practical and technical arrangements for evening events (public and private), with the aim of contributing to improved visitor experience and increased income. This includes venue set up and trouble-shooting.

  •  To assist with ‘transforming’ the house as and when required ie preparing rooms for private hire/ exhibition viewing/ evening events.

  •  To make sure that the reception area is well presented, with up-to-date programmes available for visitors to take, flyers, newspapers and magazines up to date.

  •  Credit card and cash: sell and record cash transactions for tickets, books and drinks and complete daily records.

  •  To keep storage of technical equipment and furniture tidy and efficient.

  •  Once a week inspect storage facilities (stationary cupboard, storage space and kitchen cupboards) and organise/rearrange the space to make sure it is kept neat and tidy.

  • To assist the Events Manager/Executive Director with the practical management of the premises, as required.

  • To provide a positive and efficient first point of contact with Pushkin House, handling personal, telephone and written enquiries.

  • On evenings when no events are taking place, administrative support for other Pushkin House work as required, including answering enquiries, amending website, and event information.

  •  To be responsible for maintaining health and safety standards in Pushkin House during evening hours, to act on the delegated authority of the Licence Holder and to lock and secure the building at the end of the evening and set the alarm.

  •  Other (depending on experience): support for social media management/ membership administration/ event marketing & design of promotional materials.

  •  Other duties as occasionally required by the Operations Manager and the Executive Director
